L. Frank Baum did move his family to California, after he became famous. Specifically to a tiny, orange orchard-surrounded village called Hollywood, where he was one of the pioneers of that newfangled technology, motion pictures. I researched his life when I was working on a novel, and discovered he called his California home "Ozcott" ... sadly, it no longer exists.
Baum was a New Yorker by birth and a Midwesterner by choice.
I did not know about his being from New York. His values were certainly mid-western. :)
